Exporting Slideshow movies for YouTube and Facebook

Updated Article - Nov 2013

In ProSelect v2013r1 and newer, you can export any slideshow that you setup in Working with Slideshows as a fully rendered .mp4 movie ready to be uploaded to Facebook, YouTube, your blog or sold to your clients.

You can also setup an unlimited number of different styles to suit different client types or different exported slideshow movies (e.g. wedding, family, seniors etc.)

With ProSelect Pro, you can design up to five different slideshows for each ProSelect album and so it’s easy to create a range of slideshow movies for different purposes using a different Slideshow Style for each one. With ProSelect (basic) you can create one slideshow at a time.

Exported movies will be exactly the same as shown in ProSelect and you have the option to add a copyright stamp (and/or favorites stamp in ProSelect v2015r1 and newer) to the exported movie files.

Further Information

You will find more information on Exporting a Slideshow Movie and About Slideshows in the ProSelect Reference Manual (quick access under the Help menu in ProSelect).

Also available is the Webinar recording Sell It With Slideshows (under the Training menu on the TimeExposure web site) and short tutorial movie Migrating Your Slideshows from ProSelect 2012r2 or earlier (in the Tutorials & Quick Tips under the Training menu also) for how to set up slideshows and music in ProSelect if you have previously been using ProSelect v2012r2 or earlier.

If using ProSelect v2012r2 and earlier (original article)

ProSelect takes advantage of Quicktime's built in transitions when creating a Quicktime movie. This results in a much smaller movie size because the transitions are rendered at the time of playback rather than needing to have each frame of the transition stored within the movie file.

However, some Apple products such as new iPand non-Apple services (such as YouTube) do not recognize Quicktime transitions in these movies and may give an error when you upload the movie or simply play without any transitions.

Conversion Software

If you wish to use a movie created by ProSelect on YouTube you first need to convert it into a fully rendered movie. The easiest way to do this is using the QuickTime 7 Pro Player.

Quicktime 7 Pro is a paid upgrade (approx US$30) to Quicktime 7. You can purchase this on-line from Apple by choosing Registration (under the Quicktime Player 7 menu) then click the Buy Quicktime Pro button.

Alternatively you can use other programs such as ScreeFlow and possibly iMovie (though we haven't tested this) to re-render the movie into a different format.

Quicktime Player 7 on Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion

If you are using Snow Leopard, then see this article Installing Quicktime Player 7 because the Quicktime Player (v10) included with Snow Leopard, no longer provides any suitable movie conversion options. If you don't have a Snow Leopard DVD, see this article Install Quicktime 7 without the Snow Leo DVD.

Quicktime Player 7 for Windows

See this article for where to download Quicktime for Windows. The Quicktime Player 7 is part of the installed software.

After the movie has been converted you can check that it is working OK by playing it on your computer before uploading. If you used the settings above then the resulting movie will be larger than the original one. You should be able to upload and play this movie on YouTube.

Producing and Converting a HD movie for other devices

Follow the above instructions except select  size appropriate to your target device. You can adjust the Quality settings and Data rate to other settings to reduce the movie size.

Other things to check:

If you have included a music track in the original movie, make sure that is not a protected music file that can only be played on your computers (eg a music file purchased from the Apple iTunes Music store. These are for your use only and will not work on YouTube.
