Photoshop CC2014 error when editing a text layer

If you use Keep Open on Photoshop when building a composite image using ProSelect Hi-Res Production then try to edit any text layers copied from your associated .psd overlay image file, Photoshop CC2014 may hang or crash or give one of the following errors messages:

Could not complete your request because something prevented the text engine from being initialised.
Could not complete your request (for text) because of a program error.

This is a known bug in Photoshop CC2014. We have have reported to Adobe hopefully they will fix this soon. To encourage them along, if you get this crash you should send them a crash report of the problem.

In the meantime, a couple of possible workarounds are:

  1. Export all of your composite images with text layers as .psd files (rather than using the "Keep Open in Photoshop") and then, after production is complete, open each one separately, edit the text layer and save them as a .jpg to send to your lab.  The error does not occur when you open the .psd files after production is completed.

  2. Use ProSelect's automatic text substitution option. This way you won't need to edit the text layers yourself - ProSelect will just replace the text for you automatically. For more information about using this feature, see the "Handling Text in Composite Layouts" page in the "Layouts - Tools" section of the ProSelect Reference Manual (quick access under the Help menu in ProSelect).

  3. Use an earlier version of Photoshop such as CC. Note: On Macs, if you start the version of Photoshop that you wish to use before you start ProSelect, then ProSelect will use that running version for production. On Windows, you need to change the registry entries to set the version of Photoshop to use as mentioned this article: Cannot connect to Photoshop in Windows.
