PSD files from Lightroom import as black images on Macs

Updated July 20, 2017

On the Mac, versions of ProSelect prior to 2017r1, may import some PSD files, created by Lightroom, as all black images.

This appears to be due to a bug in Mac OSX 32 bit CoreImage APIs because the same image can be successfully read using the OSX 64 bit CoreImage APIs.

If you open these images in Photoshop and re-save them they then will import into ProSelect without any problems. (Interestingly when you do this the resulting file is smaller than the one exported from Lightroom, so it appears that Lightroom is adding additional information to the PSD file which may be causing the problem.)

To provide a solution to this problem, ProSelect 2017r1 and newer, now uses a separate Helper application to import images. On the Mac, this is a 64bit application which calls Apple's 64bit APIs which will import Lightroom PSD files without problems. Apart from providing a solution to this issue, using the Helper App also speeds up image importing by a factor of 2-3 times depending on the number of cores in your computer.  Windows versions of ProSelect 2017r1 and newer now also use a Helper App and benefit from the faster loading times.

On Macs, to take advantage of this change, make sure that you have the Use Helper App enabled in the Preferences -> Importing Images as shown below. Note: This is the default setting in ProSelect so it should already be selected on new installations of ProSelect 2017r1 and newer.

Using earlier versions of ProSelect

If you are using earlier versions of ProSelect and are experiencing this problem, then we recommend that you upgrade to 2017r1 or newer.

Alternatively, you can export your images from Lightroom as .jpg files or, better still, use the ProSelect Plug-in for Lightroom which does this for you automatically. This plugin is a free download from the main downloads page. You can find out more about installing and using the plugin as well as recommended RAW workflow options with Lightroom in the ProSelect Reference Manual.
