Finding ProSelect Data & Preferences files

The ProSelect Data (Prices & Templates etc.) and Preferences files are stored in slightly different locations on each operating system (Windows/Mac).

(If also looking for the the location of your associated image resource files for backing up or transferring to another computer/location, then please see the article Finding the ProSelect Resources Folder.)

For ProSelect v2012r1 and newer

The default "Application Data" location of the ProSelect Data file is as follows (see notes below if note displaying):

On Mac
     Your Home Folder/Library/Application Support/ProSelect

On Windows Vista, 7, 8 & 10
     C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Roaming\ProSelect

On Windows XP
     C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\ProSelect

(If ProSelect is set up to use the "Shared Folder" option or the "ProSelect Network Server" software to share this data between computers, then ProSelect fetches the shared copy on startup or if you use ProSelect Data --> Update From Shared Location (under the File Menu). More on sharing can be found in the ProSelect Reference Manual (quick access under the Help menu in ProSelect).

AUTO-BACKUPS

Auto-Backup files are held in the "Data_Backups" subfolder of the above locations. Please see the article Backing up & Retrieving your Price Lists and Templates data or the ProSelect Reference Manual under the "Recovering your ProSelect Setup Data" section (quick access under the Help menu in ProSelect) for more information about these.

For ProSelect v2011r2 and older

The default "Application Data" location of the ProSelect Data file is as follows:

On Mac
     Your User Home/Library/Preferences

On Windows Vista, 7, 8 & 10
     C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Roaming\

On Windows XP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\

(Note: If ProSelect is set up to use the "ProSelect Network Server" software to share this data between computers, then ProSelect fetches the shared copy on startup or when you choose "Prices & Templates Data --> Copy from Network Server (under the File menu). More on this can be found in the ProSelect Reference Manual (quick access under the Help menu in ProSelect).

AUTO-BACKUPS
Auto-Backup files are held in the above "local" locations also. Please see the article Backing up & Retrieving your Price Lists and Templates data or the ProSelect Reference Manual under the "Backup & Transferring to another computer" section (quick access under the Help menu in ProSelect) for more information about these.

Notes:

  1. Your User Name is your account name (careful - sometimes this is not the same as your login name).
  2. On Mac OSX Lion and newer - by default your Library folder is hidden from view. To get direct access to the Library folder, you can open it by selecting Library under the Finder’s Go menu while holding down the Alt/Option Key.  See also the article Missing Library Folder on Mac OSX for this and more.
  3. On Windows - by default the Application Data (AppData) folder is hidden from view. To get direct access to this folder, see the article Missing AppData or ProgramData folder on Windows.

Preferences

Your Preferences file holds all other settings such as the last used operational settings for different parts of the program as well as the actual Preferences area. Your last window positions and sizes, recent albums and registration data is also saved in your Preferences file. It also includes where ProSelect finds the above Data file and ProSelect Resources folder).

You can save a copy of your Preferences file using the Save button in the "Sharing" section of Preferences window in ProSelect. If you just wish to make a backup copy, then use the Selected Folder option to specify where you wish to save it to. To recover your Preferences from a saved copy simply use the Load button after selecting the same location.

This and more such as "Sharing Preferences when using Sharing Options" can be found in the "Backup & Sharing" section of the ProSelect Reference Manual (quick access under the Help menu in ProSelect).

Preferences Notes:

  1. For ProSelect v2012r1 and older versions, while you can transfer the ProSelect Data file between Mac and PC we do NOT recommend transferring the Preferences file since this version of the file contains file/folder references (e.g. paths to music files or the default folder) which will be incompatible.
  2. If you copy this file, then some items may not be valid on the computer that you are copying the file to, and you will need to set them up again on that computer. (ie Page Setup, Slideshow Music settings, Default folders etc).
  3. The Preference file is located in the relevant folder shown in the "For ProSelect 2011r2 and older" section above.
