Setting up Lightroom for a ProSelect Workflow

When using the ProSelect Plug-in for Lightroom, here are a few tips to smooth your workflow.

  • Make sure you are using at least ProSelect version 2019r1.7 or newer.

  • You must use Lightroom Classic CC (refer to the download link in the General Information section below in this article).

  • When installing the Plug-in, be sure to follow the detailed instructions "Installing the Lightroom Plug-in" in the ProSelect Reference Manual (quick access under the Help menu in ProSelect).

  • In your Catalog Settings: Lightroom -> Catalog Settings-> Metadata, select "Automatically write changes into XMP". This will allow you to have access to your Lightroom processing data in Adobe Camera Raw.

Since this is a Catalog Setting and not a preference, you'll need to be sure to change this setting for each catalog you create.

LR Catalog Settings

  • In Lightroom-> Preferences-> External Editing-> Edit Externally File Naming: choose Template: Filename

Lightroom Preferences

  • If you are using presets to automatically add metadata like copyright information to your files, the "Copy Name" field must be empty or the text used will be added to the filename of the exported images from Lightroom, therefor, loosing the links to the original raw files.

  • Do not crop your images in Lightroom. It's best to let ProSelect have the complete file and do your cropping within ProSelect. Why? - This enables you to experiment with different croppings on your images (for your prints, layouts and books). And any cropping is not permanently applied and can be changed or removed at any time.

  • It's best to duplicate images from within ProSelect and run actions, rather than using virtual copies and presets in Lightroom. Why? - Exported copy files from Lightroom change the filename, therefore losing the links to the original raw files. Below is an example of what happens using Lightroom.

Upgrading to new versions of Lightroom - Checking Connections

When upgrading to a new version of Lightroom (on the same computer), the "ProSelect Lightroom Plug-In" should migrate to the new version.

You can check that ProSelect and Lightroom are connecting by doing the following:

  1. With ProSelect open but no album loaded, (do a "New Album" in ProSelect),
  2. Choose "Get Selected ProSelect Raws" (from Lightroom's File menu -> Plug-in Extras).
  3. You should see the message "The ProSelect Album is empty". This confirms that the plug-in is working.

General Information

You will find information on "Installing the Lightroom Plug-in" and "Raw Image Workflow Setup" in the ProSelect Reference Manual (quick access under the Help menu in ProSelect).

The ProSelect Lightroom Plug-In is installed by default with ProSelect. The plug-in installation status or new install can be done from within ProSelect under Help > Install Lightroom Plugin.
