Problem installing ProSelect on Mac OSX

Make sure you choose the correct download for Mac "ProSelect xxxx" from the ProSelect Downloads area on the ProStudio Software website for your license ("xxxx" is the software version number). The resulting file is called ProSelect_Installer_OSX.zip.

If you own a license to an older version of ProSelect and not the current version, then go to the "Old Versions" Downloads page.

Installation of ProSelect on a Mac can be done by:

  1. Locating the downloaded file "ProSelect_Installer_OSX.zip" and double-clicking on it to extract the file "ProSelect_Installer_OSX.pkg".
  2. Then double-click the resulting file to start the installer.
  3. Follow the installer prompts.

Note: For some older ProSelect versions, the installer is a .dmg file.  Double click on this and then drag the ProSelect folder to your Applications folder.

If you already have an older copy of ProSelect installed on that computer, then ensure this is not running when installing the newer version. The installer will overwrite the old version with the new version.

There is a short movie Installing ProSelect on Mac OSX available on the Tutorials & Quick Tips  (under the Training menu) that walks you through this also. It includes what to do if you see a "Gate Keeper" message from the OSX (see below).

Security message

If you see an OSX "Gate Keeper" message, then to enable the ProSelect installer to proceed:

  1. Go to System Preferences --> Choose Security & Privacy --> General Tab.
  2. Click on the Lock icon at the bottom left of the window
  3. Enter your Mac username and system password
  4. For "Allow apps downloaded from:", choose "Mac App Store and identified developers" or click "Open Anyway" button.
  5. Close the System Preferences window.
  6. Go back to the download location and repeat from step 2 in the installation process above.

Error Message

If you get a message that says that you don't have sufficient privileges to do this, then check the following:

  • Make sure that there is not an old copy of ProSelect still running. You can't replace it while it is open.
  • Make sure that the account on your computer that you are logged into has Administrator privileges - if not, you are not allowed to make changes to your Applications folder (see below).

Uninstalling ProSelect on Mac OSX

If you wish to uninstall the ProSelect software,  simply drag the ProSelect folder from your Applications Folder (or wherever else you placed it) to the Trash Folder. You should then Empty the Trash - this way, if you double-click on a ProSelect Album file, Mac OSX won't try to launch the copy of ProSelect that is in the Trash.

Setting/Checking Administrator Privileges for your Mac OSX account

The instructions below explain how to check and/or change your account settings on Mac (earlier or newer versions of Mac OSX may be different.)

  1. Open System Preferences (if not already in your Dock look in your Applications folder)
  2. Click on User & Groups (called Accounts in older versions) in the System section
  3. In the list box on the left, it will have "Admin" under your name if you are an administrator.

If you are an not already an administrator, then to change this by:

  1. Click the Lock icon at the bottom left of the window
  2. Enter your Mac system user name and password. (If you don't have one of these then you will need to get them from the person who setup your computer.)
  3. Check the box that says Allow user to administer this computer.
  4. Close the System Preferences Window
  5. You will need to restart the computer for the change to take effect.
