ProSelect Display on iPad

You can have the full power of ProSelect and the intimacy of your clients holding their images in their hands, by using an iPad and your laptop (with ProSelect open).

This can be achieved by using an iPad programs such as Air Display 3 or Duet (which effectively add an extra display to your computer) and ProSelect's Mirror Display Area feature.

You can purchase and download these apps from the App Store for around US$15. To find out more about Air Display 3, click here. For more about Duet, click here.

Air Display 3 will connect to your Mac or PC computer using a wireless network or using your iPad's charging cable. Duet only works with a cable connection.

If you have a USB 3 port on your computer then the wired connection will give a more reliable and better performance result. This is particularly important if you want to play smooth slideshows on the iPad.  You can purchase Apple Lightning cables up to 2m (6') long so you can get a good distance between your laptop and the iPad. There are also 3rd party cables available which are even longer than this (3m) - we recommend that you test them first for good performance.

Using ProSelect with Air Display

To get started you need to purchase and download the AirDisplay 3 app from the App Store for your iPad and download also download drivers for your Mac or PC from Avatron web site

Wired Connection to iPad (recommended)

Air Display's wired solution works really well when showing images in ProSelect's Display area and, with the right settings, played the Slideshow very smoothly in the iPad.

Connect your iPad to your computer using the USB charging cable. Follow the instructions and once running you should see your computer's desktop background on the iPad. See section below on using ProSelect's Mirror Screen Display.

Wireless Connection to iPad

If you wish to use the wireless option you need is access to (a fast) wireless network at your location to connect both devices together. Otherwise, you can turn your computer into a wireless hotspot and connect the iPad directly that. This latter option is the best way to get maximum performance between your compter and your iPad and also allow you to connect the devices if there is no wireless network available.

To find out how to create a wireless hotspot on a Mac, see this web page.

To find out how to create a wireless hotspot on  Windows PC, see this web page

Follow the instructions and once running you should see your computer's desktop background on the iPad. See section below on using ProSelect's Mirror Screen Display.

Slideshow performance

For optimum Slideshow performance using AirDisplay 3, we found these settings worked best:

In ProSelect's Preferences:

Turn off Use OpenGL in Slideshow Preferences. (Air Display is not optimised for OpenGL displays).

In Air Display's Settings:

Presentation Mode: On, All other settings: Off

Using ProSelect with Duet

Duet's wired solution also works really well when showing images in ProSelect's Display area and, with the right settings, played the Slideshow very smoothly in the iPad.

Slideshow performance

For optimum Slideshow performance we found these settings worked best:

In ProSelect's Preferences:

Turn off Use OpenGL in Slideshow Preferences. (Duet is not optimised for OpenGL displays).

In Duet's Settings:

Resolution: Regular, Frame Rate: 30fps, Performance: High Power

ProSelect's Mirror Display Area

For more about using ProSelect's Mirror Display Area, see "Using Two Screens" section (or "How Mirror Display Area Works" in the newest version manual) of the ProSelect Reference Manual (quick access under the Help menu in ProSelect) .

iPad Screen Orientation

With the latest version of ProSelect and Yosemite (only tested using Air Display 3), it's possible to rotate the iPad while the stepping through images in the Display Area. After a short delay the screen will be updated at the new orientation. However, you should test this yourself with your hardware/software configuration and, if it doesn't work, then lock the iPad to prevent this. You can do this using iPad's Settings: General : Use Side Switch to: Lock Orientation.

However, changing the iPad's orientation during the slideshow will mess up the screen's position so you shouldn't do this.

Using the iPad as a Third Screen

It is certainly possible to use the iPad as a third screen if you already have a TY or projector connected to your computer. You quickly switch the Mirror screen between the second and third screen by checking/unchecking the Use Third Screen checkbox in ProSelect's Preferences -> Display -> Calibration & Options -> Display Mirroring.

For maximum resolution on the iPad set Duets preferences to High Resolution (Small text). This will effectively double the resolution on your iPads screen.

Android tablets

We have received helpful feedback from a ProSelect user that it's possible to use a tablet device running Android to display images from ProSelect also. Apparently the app is called iDisplay and you can download it from the Google market. The ProSelect User had an HP touchpad running Android.

This seems to be similar to the "AirDisplay" app for the iPad's discussed above.
