Restoring Shared ProSelect Data Folder (if not backed up!)

If you are using the "Shared Folder" option for sharing your ProSelect Data (prices, templates and resource image data), and the location where you keep this folder has been lost (eg server drive crash), AND you haven't backed up this data (naughty you!), then the following may assist in restoring the shared location data again.

Note: If you are using the "ProSelect Network Server" option for sharing your data between computers, then please see the article "Recovering lost ProSelect Data file when using ProSelect Network Server"

ProSelect keeps copies of the following data on each computer:

  1. Your ProSelect_Data.xml file (this contains your prices, templates, styles, rooms etc) specifications but NOT any images

  2. LOW RES copies of any images associated with your ProSelect Data file. Note: Any of these images that have been used in a particular album (.psa file) are also saved as a copy into the album file. This is why you can still see them when you open a ProSelect album file.

However, the HI-RES versions of all resource images would have ONLY been in your Shared ProSelect Resources folder on your Server/shared drive. You don't need the hi-res versions for running the sales session, but you DO need them for Hi-Res Production (in "ProSelect Pro").

1. Backup what you can access now

To avoid any possible further loss, you should make a backup copy of the data from your local computer. You should copy the "ProSelect_Data.xml" file and the entire "ProSelect Low Res Resources" folder.

You will find these in the following location:

On Mac OSX:
Your Home Folder/Library/Application Support/ProSelect  (See Note 2)

On Windows Vista, 7, 8 & 10:
C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Roaming\ProSelect (See Note 3)

On Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\ProSelect  (See Note 3)

We suggest that you have a look at the Backup & Sharing sections on the ProSelect Reference Manual (quick access under the Help menu in ProSelect) for a full understanding of the file & folder structure used by ProSelect.

2. Now.. (after step 1), if you didn't previously backup your original ProSelect Resources Folder

The ProSelect Resource folder contains any images associated with the above, such as overlay images on templates, room view images, frame segments, mat/background images, corporate logos etc.   So assuming that you don't have a backup of your original ProSelect Resources folder, then you can copy the data (low res files at this stage) back to your replacement shared location (eg on a new Server drive) as follows:

  1. Copy the "ProSelect Low Res Resource" folder to the shared location and rename it back to "ProSelect Resources".
  2. Put a copy of your "ProSelect_Data.xml" file inside the above "ProSelect Resources" folder.
  3. Turn Sharing back on, on one of your computers and check that it is operating OK
  4. Turn Sharing back on, on the other computers.

This should get you running for sales sessions.

3. Finally, Restore your Hi-Res image files

You will now need to find/replace the low-res image files in the "ProSelect Resources" folder, with Hi-Res image files (for using with Hi-Res Production). You can do this manually by creating .png files of the original hi-res image files, or through the ProSelect Resources Images Selection window (eg the window that opens when you click on Overlay Images in the Template Editor.

See pages "Selecting External Resources" & "Adding & Deleting External Resources" (under External Resources section) in the ProSelect Reference manual for more about this.

If you have previously imported any Collections from other suppliers containing Resource Images (Note: our Composite Album Collections do NOT), you can try re-installing these. They should replace the existing data, however we suggest making a backup copy of your new ProSelect Resources folder and data file first in case you need to recover back to a previous state.

We hope this helps get you up and running again as quickly as possible!

Notes:

  1. Your User Name is your account name (careful - sometimes this is not the same as your login name).
  2. On Mac OSX Lion and newer - by default your Library folder is hidden from view. To get direct access to the Library folder, you can open it by selecting Library under the Finder’s Go menu while holding down the Alt/Option Key.  See also the article Missing Library Folder on Mac OSX for this and more.
  3. On Windows - by default the Application Data (AppData) folder is hidden from view. To get direct access to this folder, see the article Missing AppData or ProgramData folder on Windows.
