Recovering lost ProSelect Data file when using Sharing

If you are using either the ProSelect Network Server or the Shared Folder option to share your prices and templates data, and this data is not showing up on a local computer(s), then please check the following:

If missing shared data after initial Sharing Setup

After setting up sharing for the first time on a computer, make sure that you re-start the ProSelect software to get ProSelect on your local computer to copy the data from the shared location (Shared Folder location or ProSelect Network Server), or use ProSelect Data --> Update from Shared location (under the File Menu).

Local computers missing shared data previously accessed

If your prices and templates data are now not showing up on any of your local computers running the ProSelect software and it was previously, then the following will assist.

It may be that someone using one of the computers made a change to the templates and data section in ProSelect (before doing the above), and it copied the local copy of the data (with no templates in them for example) to the ProSelect Network Server data location, effectively overwriting the existing data.

If you are using the ProSelect Network Server (recommended if you have 3 or more computers sharing the data), then you should have the ProSelect Network Server set up to only allow one computer to save changes (Read/Write permissions) and all the others to be read only. This will prevent these sort of mistakes.

Anyway, you now need to recover the data from one of your backup copies....

  1. First disconnect all computers from the Shared location using Preferences -> General Settings -> Sharing: Not Shared
  2. Find a recent backup copy of your ProSelect data file (ProSelect_Data.xml). If you haven't been keeping these, then see the section below for some possible ways to recover a copy.
  3. On the "main admin computer", use ProSelect Data -> Import Data from (under File Menu) to load the backup ProSelect_Data.xml file into ProSelect on that computer.
  4. Turn Sharing back on on that computer and click the "Send to Shared" button to upload that computer's data to the Shared Location.
  5. On each of the other computers, turn sharing back on and then use ProSelect Data -> Update from Shared location (under the File Menu) to download the data from the shared location.

Recovering Your ProSelect Data File

If you haven't been keeping regular backup's of your IMPORTANT ProSelect Data, please see the article "Backing up & Retrieving your Price Lists and Templates data" for locating a recent "Auto-Backup" copy that you may be able to use.

Remember, if you are using the ProSelect Network Server, make sure that you look in BOTH the Server's saved backup locations as well as on one (or all) of your local computers for a copy that was made PRIOR to losing your data. You can usually determine which is the one you want by the "Last modified date" on the file as well as the size of the file - a larger file will have more data in it.

Where to find the backup data for the ProSelect Network Server can be found under the section "ProSelect Network Server Data Folder Location" of this article.
