Trouble shooting data sharing

If you are using a sharing option and have updated your setup on one computer but your changes are not getting correctly updated on the other computers then this article outlines the steps to take.

Make a backup copy of your data

Firstly, on your master computer (the one that you have all of your latest changes on) make a back up of your new data if you haven't already done so. Please see the article Transferring Prices and Templates to another computer.

Checking your Sharing Setup Options

If you are using one of the sharing options in ProSelect, then possibly one or both computers has the shared preference setting turned off, or the computer that is not automatically updating does not have "Always update the data file on this computer without asking" checked in the sharing preferences. If you want this unchecked, then you can manually choose "Update from ProSelect Data file --> Shared Location (under File Menu in ProSelect). If this command is greyed out, then your sharing is not setup correctly. See below for further help with this.

A. Manually transferring your data

If you are not using a sharing option to share your ProSelect Prices & Templates data between your computers, then you will need to manually copy the ProSelect Data file to your other computer (this file holds your Prices and Template data).  Please see this article Transferring Prices and Templates to another computer.

B. Using a Shared Data Folder

If you are using the Shared Data Folder option to share your ProSelect Prices & Templates data between your computers, then here are the instructions from the ProSelect Reference Manual (Using a Shared Folder II - in  the Backup & Sharing section) with some additions.

  1. Close ProSelect on all computers.
  2. Make a backup copy of your master ProSelect Resources Folder and ProSelect Data file if not already done so as suggested above.

On your master computer

  1. Open ProSelect.
  2. Copy your ProSelect Resources folder to the shared location on your network (if not already).
  3. Open Sharing Setup window in Preferences (General Tab --> Sharing) and click the Shared Data Folder radio button. If the Setup window does not open, click the Setup button.
  4. Select your shared Resource Folder Location
  5. If you haven’t done so already, you can upload your current ProSelect Data from your computer to the Share Folder by clicking on the Send to Shared button.
  6. We recommend that you Always Update the Data File on this computer without asking.
  7. To allow this computer to make changes to the data file, select either the second or third options under Saving ProSelect Data File Changes.
  8. Click the OK button to close the Setup window
  9. Click Save button to save the Preferences.

On the other computer(s):

  1. Open ProSelect.
  2. Open Sharing Setup window in Preferences (General Tab, Sharing) and click the Shared Data Folder radio button. If the Setup window does not open click the Setup button.
  3. Select your shared Resource Folder Location (if not already)
  4. To allow this computer to make changes to the data file, select either the second or third options under Saving ProSelect Data File Changes, otherwise select "Don't Save changes".
  5. Click the OK button to close the Setup window
  6. Click Save button to save the Preferences.
  7. Select Update from ProSelect Data file -> Shared Location (under File Menu)

C. Using the ProSelect Network Server

If you are using the "ProSelect Network Server" software to share your Prices & Templates data, then make sure:

  1. You have the same version set (eg version 2016r1) for "Only allow connection from:" in the server software, for the version of ProSelect that you are using. (The server will ignore any requests from a different versions of ProSelect.)
  2. That the server software is always running first before any copies of ProSelect are opened.
  3. Each installed version of ProSelect must be the same version to enable the connection to the ProSelect Network Server
  4. That the Preference setting in each copy of ProSelect regarding sharing is setup correctly for the "Network Server". (The master computer you made the changes should have the "Read/Update All Shared Data" on. See the section "Understanding Server Permissions" (in the ProSelect Network Server section) of the ProSelect Reference Manual for important and helpful information about this (quick access under the Help menu in ProSelect).
  5. In the ProSelect Network Server, you can click the Show Activity button to open a window that shows all requests and responses between different copies of ProSelect and the Server. You should be able to make a change to your setup (eg change a price in your price list and, on closing the Price List Setup window, see the update happen in the  Show Activity window on the server.
