Working with Raw images in ProSelect

If you shoot RAW images, you can still tie these into a sales and workflow solution using ProSelect. Here's how....

PRESENTATION AND ORDERING

  1. ProSelect can't directly open Raw files so you will need to also have .jpg (or .tif or .psd) versions of your raw images. The simplest way to do this is to set your camera to record "raw+jpg".  Many cameras have the ability to also select the jpg size in this mode and, in most cases, the smallest jpg size is larger than you need for previewing in ProSelect, so use this and save some card space!

Alternatively you will need to use other software (eg PhotoShop, Lightroom etc.) to produce some jpg versions of your raw images. In this case make sure both the raw files and the converted jpg's are in the same folder when you load them into ProSelect. If you are using Lightroom 3 or newer, you can optionally install the free ProSelect Plugin for Lightroom which will enable you to automatically create the .jpg images from your selected raw images and import them into a ProSelect album. See the section below for more about this.

  2. In ProSelect's preferences (Importing Images Tab --> Settings --> Adding Images Box), check the box that says "Link/Bypass RAW files with extensions" and enter the file extension for your raw images in the boxes below. eg CR2, NEF etc. (You can enter 3 different extensions).

  3. With all your raw and .jpg images in the same folder, select that folder to load into ProSelect. ProSelect will only load the .jpg files (ignoring the raw files for the time being).

  4. Go through the usual sales and ordering process in ProSelect.

PRODUCTION

If you are using ProSelect's high-res production module to do your production:

  1. In the Produce high-res images dialog select the images ordered in the list. Click the "Open Raw Images in Photoshop" button. This will open them in Adobe's RAW converter (if you have Photoshop CS then you can only open one at a time... CS2 allows multiple images to be opened). (See below for using Lightroom to re-touch your RAW images).

  2. Do your corrections to the raw files and save them as .tif files back into the same folder as the original images. Saving as .tif is optional, you can save as .jpgs and replace your previous un-retouched .jpg file or even .psds if you like.

  3. Back in ProSelect, click the "Re-link Photoshopped" button. This will instruct ProSelect to look for and link to the latest version of each image that you have just worked on. In this case, it will be the .tif files that you saved. These file will then be used in the production phase.

  4. When ready to start production, check each image and click the "Make High-Res Images" button. ProSelect will then automate Photoshop using the .tif files to produce your final images.

If you are NOT using ProSelect's high-res production module to do your production:

  1. Under the Album menu, Original Images, select Copy or Move Ordered Images to... and specify an output folder. The .jpg and associated raw files that have been ordered will be copied to a working folder for you to work on.

In both these options, you are saving the raw processing to last so you only have to do it on the images that have been ordered rather than all the images that were shot.

LightRoom 3 or newer

If you are using Lightroom 3 or newer and ProSelect 2012r1 (2012r1.4 or newer required), you can download install the free  ProSelect Plug-in for Lightroom into Lightroom from the main downloads page.

The ProSelect Plug-in for Lightroom allows closer integration between ProSelect and Lightroom allowing you to:

  1. Automatically create the .jpg images from your selected raw images (into the same folder as the raw images) and import them into a new or already open ProSelect album.
  2. Create a Lightroom collection of Raw images in Lightroom from the currently selected images in ProSelect so you can edit or retouch the images in Lightroom. You can select the images in either ProSelect’s main window or the Hi-Res Production window. After editing export the re-touched images (as .jpgs) back into the same folder as the RAWS. This will replace the original un-retouched jpgs with the updated ones which will then be used when running Hi-Res Production.

Note: If you want to use Lightroom as your default RAW image editor then set this up in ProSelect's Preferences -> General Settings -> General -> Photo Editor.

Please see the Installing and Using the LightRoom Plug-In section near the end of the ProSelect Reference Manual (2012r1.4 and newer) for how to setup and use this plugin. Quick access to this manual can be found under the Help menu in ProSelect.

ProSelect also supports Lightroom's naming convention of "filename-editX" when re-linking to the newest version of an image in Production. See the High-Res Production section of the ProSelect Reference Manual for more details on re-linking files.

Using Both Lightroom and Photoshop

Many photographers use both Lightroom and Photoshop in their workflow. Ligthroom is used to do the initial raw processing and conversion to jpgs with final re-touching being carried out in Photoshop. In this case, you would setup ProSelect's Preferences to Open Raw Images in Photoshop.

In order to preserve any adjustments that you initially made to your raw images in Lightroom, you need set up Lightroom to save these changes into an .xmp sidecar file (rather then keep them in the Lightroom database where they are not accessible by Photoshop). If you do this then Photoshop will pick up these settings when you use  Open Raw in Photoshop from ProSelect's Hi-Res production window.

To set up Lightroom to do this:

  1. Choose Edit > Catalog Settings (on Windows) or Lightroom > Catalog Settings (on Mac OSX).
  2. Check the box for Automatically Write Changes Into XMP

Using Lightroom 1 or 2

If you are using earlier versions of Lightroom, you can select either Lightroom or Photoshop as your default raw converter.  To use Lightroom either select the default Raw Photo Editor to be Lightroom in the Preferences (General Settings --> General Tab), or hold the Alt/Option key down while selecting and the opposite editor will be selected instead (ie if your default setting is for Photoshop then ProSelect will use Lightroom).

ProSelect will open the selected program when you choose "Original Images -> Open Raws in ..." (under the Album menu) or the "Open Raws in ..." button in Production.
